Chapter 12

“So that’s probably why Marcus hasn’t been heard from in quite some time. He’s overseas. Most likely in France,” Alex paused and then wrapped up his briefing. “Which doesn’t narrow it down that much, but at least we’re a lot closer to knowing where he is now.”

Looking around the room, Viv could see that their news had been well received. Belmont looked pleased that they’d made some progress on the case, and Griffin smiled at her. Alex had explained what their time in Livingston had yielded. During the meeting, she had found herself glancing sideways at Lex, watching his face as he talked.

She sighed. It was time to admit it to herself, even if she’d never admit it to anyone else. She was infatuated with the man. He radiated confidence, did so well at his job, not to mention being handsome, with a great body. Apparently her hormones had overrun her common sense. She’d just have to stay far away from him, in order to get over it. Even as she said it to herself, she knew that was impossible. They had to work together to get this case over with and then she wouldn’t have to see him again. He’d head back into another job and not look back and Viv could only hope that she could protect her heart, so she wasn’t left hurting when it happened.

While she’d been lost in thought, the meeting had broken up. Viv tuned back in just as Belmont ordered her and Alex to head to France to follow up on the lead and Alex asked to talk to Belmont in private.

He glanced at her and she said, “If it’s not about the case, I’ll just wait for you.”

He nodded and followed Belmont out of the room. Griff stood, but instead of following the other men, he crossed to where Viv sat. He sat next to her and looked at her, but didn’t say anything.

Avoiding his eyes, Viv asked, “What?”

“Nothing. Have you talked to Ana lately?”

“No, not since I got back from Oklahoma. Why?”

“Oh, nothing. She and I chatted last night, she wanted to know how you were.”

“What’s new with Dr. Ana these days?”

“Nothing major. She was bemoaning the fact that there’s no man in her life.”

“Really? She’s usually so independent, like me.”

He smiled and made his move. “Right. Independent like you. So, what’s up with you and Mr. Alex Masterson?”

Viv groaned. She knew what he was getting at and realized that the whole conversation about Ana had been a lead into what he really wanted to know. She didn’t meet his eyes.

“Nothing,” she muttered.

“Yeah, right. Do you know how he looks at you when you aren’t paying attention? And I’ve heard the two of you argue. You never argue with me.”

“That’s not true,” she responded hotly.

Griff laughed. “Okay, you’re right. We argue all the time, but not like you do with him. Plus, you watch him. I think you like him.”

At his teasing tone, Viv blushed and averted her eyes.

“Whatever. And
